About us
The GAL Sulcis Iglesiente Capoterra e Campidano di Cagliari (or GAL Sulcis Iglesiente) is the Local Action Group (LAG) of South West Sardinia. It aims to promote sustainable development of the rural areas, with a participatory approach. The LAG was formally established in 1996 and has been continuously operating since then, renewing itself at each European programming period.
The area is home to relevant naturalistic and geological sites and hosts significant industrial archeology and mining heritage complexes. For decades, the area represented one of the most important metalliferous and carboniferous districts in Western Europe. The wine production in the territory includes a “designation of origin” (DOC Carignano del Sulcis) and two “indication of geographical typicality” (IGT Valli di Porto Pino and IGT Isola dei Nuraghi).
Cooperation
Over the years, the LAG has developed several cooperation projects, both locally and transnationally - with other LAGs in Sardinia and other European Countries - as well as with other groups similar in objectives and approach. The LAG has been collaborating in several projects on the themes of the valorisation and promotion of territories, short supply chain and social agriculture.
For the 2023-2027 Programming period, cooperation projects will be developed in these three fields:
- Diversification in agriculture,
- Sustainable tourism (enogastronomic and cultural itineraries),
- Internationalisation of enterprises.
Where we are
The LAG is located in the south west of Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean and one of the 20 regions of Italy. The island of Sardinia is located immediately south of Corsica, west of the Italian Peninsula and north of Tunisia.
The headquarters of the LAG are located in Masainas, about an hour's drive from the capital of the region of Sardinia (Cagliari) and its airport (Elmas).
